Mr. David Nakhid was appointed Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs on May 22, 2025. He also serves as a Senator in the 13th Republican Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago, where he sits on the Committee for Social Services and Public Administration and the Committee on Public Administration and Appropriations.
Since entering Parliament in 2020, Mr. Nakhid has been an active contributor to national policy debates, bringing insight and conviction to legislation on education, agriculture, national security, and youth development. He has participated in deliberations on key bills, including the Constitution (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and the Finance (Supplementary Appropriation) (Financial Year 2025) Bill, 2025. Beyond the parliamentary chamber, Mr. Nakhid is widely recognized as an international statesman, educator, and sports leader. A former captain of the Trinidad and Tobago national football team (1996–2001), he represented the country at three CONCACAF Gold Cups and holds the distinction of being the first Trinidad and Tobago footballer to compete professionally in Europe. His professional career spanned top flight clubs in Switzerland, Belgium, Greece, Sweden, the United States, Lebanon, and the United Arab Emirates.
Committed to harnessing the transformative power of sport, Mr. Nakhid founded the David Nakhid International Football Academy in 2006, which has trained and mentored hundreds of young athletes across Europe, the Middle East, and the Caribbean. His academy has also delivered humanitarian sport programmes for refugee youth and established scholarship pathways linking sport with academic opportunity.
An alumnus of the American University in Washington, D.C., Mr. Nakhid holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and Economics. He is the recipient of the prestigious Charles Van Way Award for scholarship and service, and in 2005, he was inducted into the American University Hall of Fame for his outstanding contributions as both a student-athlete and global leader. He also holds a UEFA ‘A’ Coaching License from the English Football Association.
Fluent in several languages, Mr. Nakhid brings a global perspective to national service. His work bridges sport, education, policy, and diplomacy, reflecting his lifelong commitment to empowering youth, advancing sustainable development, and building stronger, more connected communities at home and abroad.
